| Thursday morning 5am and I'm waterproofing my Paramo jacket, what else have I forgotten to do? I still had 7½ hours on the bus to think about it before setting off.The last part of the journey from Fort William to Kilchoan was very pleasant with a Van Morrisson CD playing and an excellent driver (Gordon) helping people on and off and delivering everything from holidaymaker's vegetables to Challengers lost tent poles (no names!).

| The hazy sun and no wind made the road walk to the point warm going and a quick Guinness break at the Sonachan Hotel was very welcome. This was the first time I had carried a full pack since the end of last year, events had prevented my planned pre-Challenge trek, and it took the first two days to settle into it.

Ardnamurchan is not actually the most westerly point, it is Corrachadh Mor 1½km further south, but I chose to ignore this as I scrambled down the rocks to wet the boots in the Atlantic below the lighthouse before turning round for the start of the trip east.

Picking my way through caravans, houses, bogs and hills I roughly followed the coast through Portuairk and Sanna and up to the outer rim of the old volcano where I found a suitable pitch, with cuckoo, below Meall Eigin-aig.
